Before you do, let’s talk a minute about where you see yourself.

There are four discussion points today plus the link to the CFS Advisory Committee page with the 28 videos… .
Today’s audio podcast is 5 minutes and 20 seconds

1) Do you keep up with everything CFS? I’m betting, “No.” You’re more likely a person with CFS or you’re the caregiver of a patient (child, teenager or adult). You’re doing the best you can to figure out what’s wrong with “you” and you’re trying to get well!

2) You only have so much time and energy available to pay attention to a specific topic, such as what’s really happening in the world of CFS News. You’re glad to know that real and important issues are being discussed, but unless your life allows the activity, you may miss a few things from time to time.

That’s assuming you don’t have such severe brain fog that you can keep up at all. If you can’t, I do my best to bring you the highlights. Such services as either reading and accessing the information here on the website or signing up for my RSS feed, and you’ll still get everything and miss nothing! The information will simply come to you easier, where and when you’re ready to consume it. Find the RSS sign up box with (orange with white stripes) in the right-hand column of this page. Sign up today!

3) You want to lend support to advocacy, awareness or research issues, as best you can. But can you do everything you want to do? Some days, can you meet any of those goals at all?

4) For most people, it’s difficult to feel that we’re getting ahead, especially in the area of research. It’s there; it’s significant. It’s there; it proves nothing. The money is not there at all…because past government officials tried to pull the wool over everyone’s ideas and abscond with the research money for their own pet projects. On and on the story goes. Where or where does the money go?

I urge you to bookmark this page right now: The 2011 November CFS Advisory Committee meeting. There are quite a few videos posted on this page. If you do this, you can watch some now, some later when you have down time. Example: when you’re suffering through your husband’s ball game. Instead, you can quietly don a pair of headphones and really learn something instead! I’m not saying that every bit of this material is worth writing home about, but there is good stuff contained within these multiple video presentations. Over the Internet is a great way to see and hear it, if you didn’t attend the CFSAC Advisory Committee meeting and conference in person.

Stay tuned for more and learn what’s happening in the field of CFS News.
AND LEAVE A COMMENT!

You simply must check out this incredible resource for have-to-have-it information and videos on ME/CFS.

Listen to my podcast. I hope my words of encouragement give you hope to keep on…keeping doing what you’ve got to do until healing is on the horizon for ME/CFS.

Next continue down the page for the link to the extensive videos featuring Dr. Richard van Konynenberg of Sweden. He talks about the similarities and differences between ME and CFS and so much more. He demonstrates why he and many of his colleagues believe that these two health problems are really one single illness, ME/CFS. And because “chronic fatigue syndrome” is such a vague term, how and why the illness called ME, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis may be a better, overall name.

And, before you leave, don’t forget the October 15, 2011 Wellness Seminar by Laura Gentile & her cohorts. I’ll be among the speakers that day!

Often putting your health first is not easy and not an option for many reasons. For me, though, it’s a necessity right now. In originally getting well from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other illnesses, I was like an athlete suddenly waking from a horrible nightmare and wanting to bolt out of the gate. (Learn “how” with the video below.)

Thankfully, that revival happened over six years ago. I enjoy great energy and few symptoms most of the time, but currently…I’m struggling. Why? Probably from stress and burning the proverbial candle at both ends. So you ask…

“What are you going to do in putting your health FIRST?”

Answer: In being truly transparent with you, my audience, I plan to drop back and return to basics by taking some downtime for “Cinda”. I’ll spend time being revived and refreshed using the energy and spiritual healing work that helped me heal in the first place! With Sacred Cellular Healing!

I hope you enjoy the following video that explains this even better. And, I promise to update you on my progress as I feel better.

Here’s a belief I believe we all share: as human beings living in a complicated modern society, we all are at the mercy of stress in our lives. I didn’t suddenly “run down”. The truth is my engine has felt challenged, running slower and darned rough for awhile. So, logically, I will be working to recoup my vitality. My efforts to feel better may take some time to work because the stress in my life is not going away simply because it’s affecting me negatively. We’ll have to see how I do. Either way I promise to check back in with you for an update.

So…how about you? What are you doing to feel better? How are you getting well? What do you have to fall back on when your health and life are challenged and stress is cracking your whip?

Thanks, Cinda Crawford, host of the Health Matters Show

On a previous blog post and podcast about CFS symptoms, I listed only the basic Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms, but now it’s time to dig deeper and talk about what’s on the Additional CFS Symptom List. It a whoppingly big list and one that you’ll need to study carefully if you have a new case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or if you’ve suffered with it for awhile. It’s worth your time and effort.

Today I’ll hit upon most all standard CFS symptoms and related problems. For any additional symptoms that you want to discuss, please leave a comment below. Truly, CFS is by itself a complicated illness. When you add it everything else on this “additional CFS symptom list”, you truly have one messy, revolting and un-friendly illness that no one wants and is tough to get rid of.

My friends and acquaintances find this out daily. CFS is yucky!! They don’t like being sick. They don’t have good answers.

When I was so sick, I stopped counting everything that was wrong with me. (Now I say that a bit tongue-in-cheek. No one should ignore a physical symptom. It may not be something that will wait. If you have cancer, heart or blood pressure problems or such an under-active Immune System that your life is truly threatened, you may be glad to paid attention to every single health problem.)

But what I do mean by it is that almost everything my doctor tested me for, I had.

Do you have Questions about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? If you do, you’re not alone. As many as a million people or more suffer with this illness and there are few answers to help them figure out: how they got sick, what to do to feel better, how to recover or exactly what is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. ????

Since 1984 at Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, a group of people began to file into the doctor offices of Dan Petersen and Paul Cheney complaining about a host of symptoms that neither separately made sense nor collectively. What was wrong with them?

Many were extremely fatigued to the point that they could not get out of bed, much less work or participate in life. Plus they suffered with nausea, dizziness, immune system irregularities and truly, a long list of life-altering complaints. This all happened within a few months and the good doctors suspected that one or more infectious agents could be the cause. However, no single one could be found, even though many were suspected and studied. Since that time, many private and a few government-related research projects have sought to answer these baffling questions.

Over the years it’s become apparent…

(10 minutes 42 seconds)

Over the years it’s become apparent to me that none of those suspected causes are the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome at all, but instead the result of an impaired immune system that can no longer effectively fight off disease (e.g. bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.).

Having an impaired, dysfunctional immune system is considered a hallmark symptom of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But surely there must be some cause or otherwise how could this be? Why? Is there one trigger among the group of suspected culprits that can bring about such a reaction within the Immune System? It turns out there are several that can affect the immune system so severely.

But are they the cause or the result of a body gone haywire?

In an attempt to answer some of your more basic questions about this puzzling illness, each first Friday for at least the next six months, I’ll attempt to discuss some of the basics that you want to know about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This week it is “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: What is it?”. *See this additional page for more references.

If there is anyone who knows a good bit about your personal health problem, Balancing My Life with Fibromyalgia, it’s has to be my interview guest today for the Health Matters Show, Dr. Charles Lapp. He is a Fibromyalgia and CFS specialist doctor and director of the Hunter Hopkins Center in Charlotte, NC.

I’ve interviewed him several times and known him for more than twenty years. Today I have a video for you which includes part of today’s tip #4, which I’ll sum up as, “Know what you’re using for pain, sleep and anxiety control. You need good tools that work.”

Without any exception that I know of, people classed as having Fibromyalgia endure problems with central nervous system dysfunctions, such as pain, insomnia, anxiety and fatigue. Watch the video and hear Dr. Lapp discuss these problems, particularly addressing Fibromyalgia pain and the drugs which he uses to control pain and sleep issues in his patients.

Other products (besides the ones he talked about- Lyrica, Cymbalta, Savella and Xyrem) that are used for Fibromyalgia pain and symptom control include the ever popular Ultram, Neurontin, Xanax and Klonopin, plus plenty of muscle relaxers such as Skelaxin, Flexeril and Zanaflex. Of course, let’s not forget narcotic pain relieving drugs, pain shots, nerve blocks and pain patches. You won’t hear doctors recommending narcotic drugs because they don’t tend to work very well, but they have become an accepted part of the culture with so many, many patients living their lives in extreme pain 24/7.

I am happy to bring you this video with Dr. Charles Lapp telling you about the prescription drugs that he uses in his medical practice. If you have experience with these Fibromyalgia pain drugs or other drugs, I urge you to leave your comments below. Balancing My Life with Fibromyalgia- Video Tip #4 may be an important video, but it’s by no means the last word in how each person can survive this horrible illness or figure out how to get well.

Thanks so much to Dr. Charles Lapp and each of you for joining me today!

Let’s suppose you’re making a valiant effort right now: your theme song is Balancing My Life with Fibromyalgia and the tune is not so sweet. I’m guessing that you need some help. In the previous posts on this topic, Fibromyalgia video #1 and Fibromyalgia video #2, you can find some very valuable information. Today in tip #3, we’re talking about hopes, dreams and reaching your goals of wellness.

See please take a look at today’s video, then proceed deeper into the post for more thoughts. There may even be a challenge or two that will get you thinking.

Okay, here is the challenge. Begin by asking yourself these questions: (this all assumes you’re tired of being sick with Fibromyalgia!)

How do you see yourself participating in life up to this point?

Do you have an idea of how you will get well?

If you do participate and are active, what methods will you employ to reach your goals?

BEWARE!

Please don’t pin all your hopes and dreams on a magic pill or one magic theory that could have flaws. There is so much yet-to-be-discovered information and answers for both Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The key is to keep an open mind and keep on searching for the right answers for you.

There is absolutely no one who wants to hear you singing your song, Balancing My Life with Fibromyalgia, with more joy, more spirit or more success than I do. The key is finding out how to do it!

Thanks so much for joining the Health Matters Show today and this special Fibromyalgia video.

Balancing life and Fibromyalgia together is a constant physical, mental, emotional and spiritual battle for most people who are ill.

If that’s you, it is likely that you constantly struggle with physical tasks. Can you do this or that? Will you fall down and get hurt? Will your body cooperate and have enough stamina to complete the job?

Mental challenges can either be tough -or- totally un-doable because of the difficulty of using your brain totally overwhelmed with brain fog (e.g. Fibro fog or cognitive dysfunction).

“Trying to think through Fibro fog is like slogging through a mud bog or a severe head cold for which the head congestion never goes away.”

Emotionally you may be tired of waging the daily battle, but what choice do you have? If you want to get well, you have to show up and fight everyday.

And spiritually, you may be having a tough time holding on to your faith, but your Creator is always there beside you to help you. He will provide you the love and support that you need.

Today, let’s talk about the art of balancing the multi-areas, the multi-tasks of life. When did you ever have the luxury of only handling one thing at the time? Please leave your comments below. It would be such a nice, multi-task gesture!

BALANCE (or the act of balancing) implies that you have the ability to multi-task and do several things at once.

I think that women are fairly good at multi-tasking when they’re feeling well; men, not so much so. However, on bad days when a Fibro flare has raised it’s ugly head, no person with Fibromyalgia can usually handle more than one task at the time. You’re probably doing good to get one thing accomplished without triggering a headache or severe fatigue.

On days when you’re sub-par (even more brain fog than usual) mentally or physically, back off. Choose your most important or most rewarding task and tackle it first.

If you get it done and you’re proud of your accomplishment, revel in the glory. If you can’t finish it, put it at the top of your to-do list for the next available day or time slot. Remember: slow and steady wins the race! The rabbit probably is still panting by the side of the road!

Thanks so much and don’t forget to leave a comment with your own tips for “balancing life and Fibromyalgia”! Brain fog is one of its tougher symptoms…for sure.

When it comes to balancing life and keeping all the balls in the air, balancing life and Fibromyalgia or any chronic illness can be very tricky. Today I’m starting a “tip series” on this topic. Please join in with me to discuss something s-oo-oo important.

Some reasons may be obvious; others not. Let’s take a look at them.

I’ll share some pointers and then maybe you will too by leaving them as a comment below. If you have more suggestions for topics, feel free to leave them in the comment section. That would be great and give all of us a chance to learn from each other…and maybe help out others who are not mastering their life-style juggling act!

What is balance?

BALANCE implies that you’re on sure footing or solid ground. If you’re not feeling well and having a bad day (or month) with Fibromyalgia, that component of “balance” may not be present.

You feel wobbly and swimmy-headed. The world may seem a bit out of focus and you’re constantly squinting your eyes to feel like you can see well. You may be fighting a headache. Also, you’re catching every railing on the stairs and looking for support when you land. Where is the nearest chair?

TIP #1: Take it slow. At every activity, every step, be aware of your limitations on this hour and during this day. Pushing yourself when you’re feeling sub-par and out-of-balance will not help in any way. It will aggravate your Fibromyalgia and you may pay dearly for it later!

Thanks so much for joining me today. Be sure to catch the blog during the week and the podcast on Friday. “We” discuss Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome issues. Comment away and be part of the fun and part of the education! We’re “balancing life and Fibromyalgia!”

Do we need clinical trials now for ME/CFS? We don’t have any that I know of and I’m wondering why not. Could it be that the status quo (e.g. do little to nothing) is adequate? No. That’s can’t be. ME/CFS stands for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a brain illness. How can we not investigate something as ominous as an illness like that which affects 1 million people in the US and 17 million people worldwide?

Probably because it’s tied to the very trivial sounding, CFS or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Such a silly and non-specific name. Isn’t everyone tired? Of course. We live in a universe of overly stressed and tired people. Take a look at the video below, which was produced this year in San Francisco, California. Then share how this illness affects your life and what you personally think needs to be done. And finally, share the links to this post so that we can encourage and promote clinical trials now for ME/CFS. It’s time!

If you’ve ever felt like you’ve been run over and left in the middle of the road for dead, you could have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Sounds like the title to a Jeff Foxworthy sketch, doesn’t it…except these illnesses are not funny. Please see the video podcast below and leave your comments.

Most people with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome feel so badly that they can’t remember how to feel good. Only when an occasional good day comes along can they say, “A-ha! Now I remember what it feels like to be human.” They’re not kidding. Some people with the illness only suffer mildly ‘most’ of the time, but for other people on bad days, the ‘ole truck or train heads right in their direction.

Whoot! Whoot! Here I come again. Get out of the way. I’ll get you again, again and again!

Now the video below is not perfect. I misspoke several times in the recording, but none of us have to be perfect in this world. That’s just a myth. Improved or healed is the optimal state to strive for. We only have to do the best that we can do. With that said, don’t lose hope. Remember: when you’ve been run over and left in the middle of the road, you are no longer by yourself. Other angels surround you, wishing you well, encouraging the best in you and wishing you healthy again.

Some people think that getting well from CFS or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is impossible. A pipe dream. Naysayers warn, “No one ever gets well.” I’m here to tell you that simply is not true. 40% of people who come down with CFS get “well” by the end of the fourth year. Other people can get well after that, but the percentages go down the longer you’re sick.

This and other information was some of the data revealed to us by Dr. Charles Lapp this last week.

For 20 years, a doctor in upstate New York has been trying to prove that an outbreak of the strange syndrome in his community was caused by a virus. Now new evidence is reopening the case.

Ginger Burg at her home in Gasport, N.Y., near Lyndonville. Ms. Burg, who fell ill at age 14, recalls that she and the others who got sick were considered ‘crazy, delusional, lazy people.’ One snowy afternoon in October 1985, eight children from the tiny farming community of Lyndonville, N.Y., went sledding together. Within a few weeks, they all got sick.

David Bell, the local doctor (a.k.a. Dr. David S. Bell) who treated the children, recalls that their symptoms were similar to the flu: sore throats, fevers, muscle aches and severe fatigue. After three days, they hadn’t recovered. Then a week. A month. Ninety days.

Nearly 25 years after the “Lyndonville outbreak” of chronic fatigue syndrome, a controversy is brewing among scientists over what causes the disease. A small-town doctor hopes his patients will help provide the answer. (See all the links below.)

For Dr. David S. Bell, Ginger Burg, the other Lyndonville children who are now grown adults and for millions of other people suffering with Chronic Fatigue, “chronic fatigue” is certainly a puzzle worth solving. Like us, Dr. Bell has his own ideas about the process that has taken so long… . “My greatest fear,” Dr. Bell says, “is that people will throw up their hands and say they are not going to pursue it.”

(When you finish this blog post, go here and click on “The Puzzle of Chronic Fatigue” below. Jason, An Illness That’s Hard to Live With or Define.)

But before you leave here, I invite you to share your ideas in a comment. What do you think is really happening with XMRV or any aspect of CFS? How has the illness affected your life? You never know…your words might help someone else to cope with this puzzle known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
