During the previous two programs on Fibromyalgia, I have been encouraging you to think about and determine what is making you sick. In today’s interview we will look at why it so often happens that a major factor can be the stress of a job, family issues or virtually everything in your life! I know when I got so sick, it was all of those things combined.

If you’re suffering with physical stress, you need to take some time off and probably relax.

If you’re being bothered by mental and emotional stress and anxiety, you need to relax because your perceptions about this topic are housed in your mind, but often expressed in your body.

If life in general is getting too much to handle,
YOU REALLY NEED TO RELAX
more than anything else!

If you don’t relax and allow your system to re-balance itself, you will be headed towards worse illness symptoms of some sort. One person may suffer migraine headaches; the next, a backache. The next, Fibromyalgia or more. Think of the 3-legged stool we’ve talked about so often. Work to balance yourself in body, mind and spirit.

Now, I can hear you, “I don’t have time to relax. It’s two days before Christmas!” Well, I’m here to tell you that you can and should relax. As a matter of fact, time spent in rest and relaxation is a wonderfully positive way to make it through the holidays and start off your new year without feeling that you’re climbing out of the gutter!

Please join me today in welcoming and interviewing Mr. Dan Howard to the Health Matters Show about this topic of Intentional Resting.
(Today’s podcast interview is 18 minutes 2 seconds long.)

Today instead of thinking about some abstract “cause” of Fibromyalgia, let’s concentrate on what we do know: it’s crucial that YOU make it through the holidays (no worse for wear) and begin 2012 on as positive health note as possible. If you take this ands-off and indirect approach to your problem of “being sick with Fibromyalgia,” (or any illness), you may get further ahead faster. Listen to today’s podcast and hear Dan Howard and I talk about how to lower mental and emotional stress by using his “Intentional Resting” technique.

Your body wants respect, time spent “honoring” it and the necessary components that bring about your long term, good health. If you become less distracted with the stuff in life that does not matter, you have a better chance of getting this right and getting healthy again. Surely better health will follow you right into the 2012 New Year.

Speaking of that, be sure to keep tuned in to all that’s going on here at the Health Matters Show. I’m starting a new Newsletter and I will be interviewing Dan Howard for a longer, tell-all seminar. I can’t wait! He has so much more to tell us. Today on the broadcast, he goes over “why” his fabulous Intentional Resting technique works. In the longer seminar, he’ll share more goodies, plus help you learn to self-practice intentional resting. As I said, stay tuned right here.

Okay, that’s it for today. Congratulations, dear ones, for making it as well as you have this year. By listening to, following and acting upon what Dan Howard has to offer you, such as his 30-day email Intentional Resting program, you will be several steps ahead and moving forward towards your good health and eliminating a whole lot of mental and emotional stress. You need to relax and there is no better time than now.

Many blessings, Cinda Crawford

We’re entering the busiest season of the year and that’s all the more reason to consider relaxing for health. I know this because I’m as prone to getting caught up in the hoo-ha as anyone else. Just yesterday I went to the mall and stayed too long. That’s when I officially became my own worst enemy. I lost my keys!

Well, you know how the tiredness and pain of Fibromyalgia and CFS can take you to that really bad place and you truly need a transport machine to instantly “poof” you back home? I didn’t have one and I began to get frantic as I walked around, overly tired, with an aching back and legs and surely a big frown on my face. Why me? Why did I have to lose my keys in the middle of the 8th row of sweaters in the store’s last display? It happens.

So today, dear ones, I have a treat for you. Click on the Health Matters Show podcast link below and hear me read a creative visualization to help you relax and help your health be all it can be. The title of it is Healing Firemen. I believe you’ll like it, plus I know you can benefit from such a nourishing experience. Block out a portion of your day to do this. Find a quiet spot for a few moments to really do some relaxing for health. Don’t let people or responsibilities distract you from taking care of yourself. But,…don’t drive while you’re listening either!

You should get an immediate benefit from this experience. If you’d like to create some of these visualizations for yourself, check out Julie Lusk’s great book below.

In this fourth interview for my Fibromyalgia and CFS audience, Janice Lynne Lundy, the Buddha Chick, talks about specific ways of using mindfulness and awareness to get in touch with yourself, especially as you grapple with the startling realities of controlling your emotions while trying to heal from chronic illness. That’s tough!

~~~~~
Today you’ll hear Janice and I refer to this topic as Emotions Are Us at times, because the more our emotions have control over us, the more sick -or shall we say less well?- we can become.
“It’s time to stop this process of allowing harmful emotions to run our lives and, instead, reverse this habit. Take back control of your emotions, knowing that when you do, you’ll be a healthier person in the long run.
IT’S TIME THAT YOUR EMOTIONS WORKED FOR YOU, NOT AGAINST YOU!”
Find all 4 of our interviews here in the month of July. I suspect Janice is a wise woman. Consider her history: she recovered from Chronic Fatigue years ago and found inner peace and better health by making daily discoveries about herself. Many of those discoveries involved her emotions. She developed an expanded practice of mindfulness and today offers it to others with her Mindful Makeover Kit plus a brand, new course for women suffering with health challenges. (*Please…don’t miss reading about this transformational body of work! Click on the link, then scan down the page. There you can read how Janice gently offers you this effective, meaningful information. Somehow it seems that she knows exactly what women suffering with health challenges need!)
Now, keep going, as you read and listen. There’s more here on the Health Matters Show today, including hearing Janice offer you her “free” e-book… .
As you and I choose greater freedom and not being a slave to the tough task master of ‘Emotions Are Us’, we can choose healthier emotions, a healthier self-concept, a healthier way to live daily that promotes wellness and inner peace. Will you ever be 100% healthy? No one can answer that, but you can live with more peace and that one fact will definitely promote a healthier you.
Purposefully choose this great, inner freedom. Choose health. Choose it now. I hope you listen to this fantastic interview with Janice Lynne Lundy and then mark your calendar to be back here next Friday for a video interview that is sure to knock your socks off! Janice has promised to do a guided meditation to help you with all of the fantastic health goals that you’re making for yourself. I promise it will be informative and absolutely delightful.
Thank you for joining the Health Matters Show today. I’m Cinda Crawford, your host. Mindfulness is something to learn for yourself and practice anywhere and everywhere, as you become skilled in controlling your emotions for your good health.
(If you’re listening here online or at i-Tunes.) You won’t want to miss this third in a series of five interviews about mindfulness and how it can positively impact your health. Friday we’ll be talking about “metta practice” and how self blessing is a major part of self love…two very important self practices. (Access the first interview and the second one from here, if you need to catch up quickly. Friday will be here soon!)
Janice is the creator of the Mindful Makeover Kit, a fantastic resource for learning more about yourself, gaining skills to deal with your ever-changing and challenging life needs and then how to develop subtle but powerful ways to kick your life and health into a gear that promotes sustainable and comforting results.
We all want to live our lives at a level of achievement that is meaningful. And, we want to gain the skills of how to enjoy them in a more healthy state. Alive and kicking can be more than a phrase!
*See Jan’s link to her Mindful Makeover kit below. I truly love what she’s doing with it in helping so many people!
In case you missed last week’s Health Matters Show, she was my honored guest. Today we will discuss in more detail, what is a Buddha Chick and explain “how” you can be one! How fabulous is that? In Janice’s own words…
The Mindful Makeover Kit empowers women to live physically calm, mentally clear, openhearted lives, handling life’s challenges with ease. It includes 10 Modules, 12 hours of downloadable recordings, Workbook, Buddha Chick™ Affirmation Cards, and private mentoring support. Nothing short of a complete life makeover with mindfulness and self-compassion.
I believe in these concepts so much that I am working on my own Mindful Makeover. One can always learn new and improved skills for being healthier and enjoying a better quality of life.
With Janice’s expert guidance, she encourages you and I to do one thing at the time and be fully present (inside and out). Get rid of your tendency towards mind-less living. Begin to sense how the world is really impacting your life. What feelings (good and bad) are you most aware of? In your sickness, which feelings and awarenesses have you blocked out and chosen to ignore?
I urge you to “make over” your life for the better starting right now. How? By making better choices. Wiser choices. Learning the techniques and tools that Janice teaches will help you arrive at a place of balance and a better quality of health.
Today, you can hear Janice talk about the “Magic Formula” for inner peace… .
What is the magic formula for inner peace?
Learn how clarity can come to your world more clearly.
How wisdom arises through love, gratitude and calmness.
How through the 50 audio course, you can master self-pacing and find the support that you need to be healthy.
Learn the life-long benefits of manifesting self-compassion and gentleness towards yourself.
Yes, it turns out that mindfulness is a kissing cousin to self-compassion. As you grow in mindfulness, you can lead a life full of loving kindness. As you tap into your body’s innate wisdom, know that you didn’t ask to be sick from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or any illness. But you do gain advantages from living with it, if you choose to be mindful.
It’s time to embrace yourself with self-compassion and love. Do this for YOU! Discover exactly…what is a Mindful Makeover with the Buddha Chick.
Many people who either are or have been sick with an illness like Fibro or CFS know what I mean before I even explain the phrase, “When life runs over you!” That’s because each person who suffers with Fibromyalgia (Fibro) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) does good to simply keep his or her head above water and not drown in the rapids. Yes, LIFE, even when it’s hum-drum and uneventful, can still be very tough.
Today, I encourage you to share with my Health Matters Show blog what part of your life seems to be on a runaway freight train.
If you’ve been doing better, but then got hit with a super stressful situation, tell us how it affected you. How did you come out of it? If you’ve only been barely scraping by enough to be labeled human, then share away.
What is always best at a point like this is to share freely, but leave everyone who reads this post and your comment with something positive. Something you learned or re-learned about your life or your health. How are you surviving? How will you get ahead of this and enjoy better health in the days or weeks ahead?
Then on Friday, I’ll tell you how I recently had to “face” this topic personally: When Life Runs Over You. Boy, did I ever! On the Friday podcast, I’ll share. I’ll let it all hang out and I’ll hopefully leave you with more hope and help for your future days ahead.
Now, leave your comments below. Leave other people with a little bit of your experience and your wisdom. We all need it and want it!
Thanks so much,
Dear Health Matters Show participant,
Every minute that you plan and execute any type of self improvement program like exercise and stretching, you put yourself further ahead and achieve your goal that much faster. Every minute that you work towards your goal adds up…with you finally arriving at a state of better health. That translates to a better state of wellness or well-being, as Laura calls it. In the end, your ultimate goal of finding balance in illness will not seem like an impossible dream at all. It will be down-right attainable.
Thank you, Cinda Crawford
Your host of the Health Matters Show
(*PS- See today’s suggested book and CD resources below. They can help you greatly in stretching and visualizing. Notice particularly the last CD by Andrew Weil and Martin L. Rossman on guided imagery. It is about a particular type of visualization work that is highly successful for many people. Enjoy!)
Ah, Thanksgiving. A time to count our blessings. Let me say, “Thank you,” to the military men and women stationed around the world who choose to keep me and my family out of harm’s way. I am grateful. Your sacrifice is meant for everyone I know, but today as I enjoy Thanksgiving Day, I am keenly aware that I am safe, warm, fed and loved. Your gift is one freely given so that our world can feel less fear, less pain and more love. May you achieve those goals. Again, I am grateful.
And thanks to my friends, colleagues and loved ones who help me put on the Health Matters Show blog and podcast each day, week, month and year. Thanks to each of you because without your contributions, your blessings, the effort would have become impossible a long time ago. I am grateful.
I especially would like to thank my husband, who through my tissues, tears and years of almost unbelievable illness never gave up on me. Not through the challenging times then and certainly not now, as I work everyday to make my dream of helping people come true. I am truly grateful to have you in my life.
Gordon, after more than thirty years of being together, I am so very thankful for you… everyday, in every way. Happy Thanksgiving, dear. Many blessings,
When you hear the subject of CFS Therapy, one might think of anti-virals, immune modulators and other various interventions, but not necessarily the add on therapy of mindfulness. It’s time for that to change. I’ve been talking about the benefits of mindfulness for some time. Now researchers are specifically advise using it as an adjunct therapy, meaning its purpose is to assist the primary treatment of CFS, not to replace it. See the research for yourself.
*The following article is due to be published soon in PubMed.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction for people with chronic diseases.
Abstract
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a structured group program that uses mindfulness meditation to improve well-being and alleviate suffering. This article reviews the impact of MBSR for people with chronic diseases. The review includes original research that was published in English and peer-reviewed and reported outcomes for adults with chronic diseases who had participated in an MBSR program.
Fifteen studies were identified. Outcomes related to mental and physical health, well-being, and quality of life. The studies included different research designs, and used self-report and physiological outcome measures. Participants’ clinical diagnoses included fibromyalgia, chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and cardiovascular diagnoses.
All 15 studies found that participation in an MBSR program resulted in improvements. No negative change was reported between baseline and follow up. Outcomes in regard to specific variables were difficult to compare and equivocal. Overall, positive change predominated.
Chronic diseases are associated with a range of unwelcome psychological and physical consequences. Participation in an MBSR program is likely to result in coping better with symptoms, improved overall well-being and quality of life, and enhanced health outcomes. As an adjunct to standard care, MBSR has potential for much wider application in Australian primary care settings.
PS- to learn a bit more about the benefits of mindfulness on this website, put the term in the internal website search engine and wait for the results. You’ll find several of them! Little my little, there’s a method to the madness of developing CFS therapies.
As you try to find a way to heal from Fibromyalgia (a.k.a. healing Fibro) and/or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (a.k.a. healing CFS), don’t be afraid to look at your emotions, your sacred spirit and recognize the connection that your mind has to your body, especially in terms of mindfulness. Each of these things can be incredibly important once they’re considered to be parts of the same puzzle. (See video below.) *Mindfulness can help you manage your symptoms until you get well.
Mindfulness can be a great tool in your tool chest for
Healing Fibro
and Healing CFS!
As you study how to get well from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, don’t just think that it’s important to address the physical process only. Yes, suffering feels very physical, but it is also mental, emotional and often spiritual combined.
1) Think of how often you become irritated when people make no attempt to try to understand what you’re going through.
2) Think of how much better everything would be if you didn’t get emotional or upset. Think of how that would help to keep your body, mind and spirit more stable.
3) Think of how mentally difficult it can be to drive the car or navigate traffic.
4) Think of how spiritually challenging it can be to stay above the fray of petty, back-biting people who don’t necessarily have your best interests at heart. Emotional situations often go hand in hand with spiritual challenges. And it seems like they show up when you don’t feel like dealing with them at all!
The doctor in the video below talks about studying mindfulness in an effort to control pain and chronic illness. He’s right. No matter your shape, health or time situations, it is possible for you to learn mindfulness and be able to handle all aspects of your illness that much better. If you practice mindfulness, healing CFS and healing Fibro will be that much easier because you’ll be handling every part of the process that much more skillfully! (Isn’t that part of the definition of success?)
Check out the following video by Steven D. Hickman, Psy.D, who talks about the success that a lady with Fibromyalgia had after learning mindfulness.
Recently Dr. Oz, along with his co-hort in the newspaper Dr. Roizen, wrote an article about the subject of how your brain and pain relief interact on such an intricate basis. I read the information with interest and then realized that while it was good and enlightening, the authors offered us nothing new on this topic of pain relief. That’s because this topic has been discussed for years.
FACT: we all have the capability of subverting the level of pain that we feel if we do not let it affect and stress us to the point of over-arousal. Their terms for this “anti” stress remedy is easy meditation, but it includes the principles of mindfulness, meditation, guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation. Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn has been teaching all of these principles for quite a few years, but mindfulness the most.
I encourage you to put the term “mindfulness” into the search engine on this website and research what I’ve written here about the topic on the Health Matters Show.
What you “think” and pay attention to is crucial in your health right this minute and to your long term health.
Also, check out…
You can find a recent Get Well Health post on this topic, Your Mind Your Health with this link. Several of the great books of Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn are listed there. I and others consider these to be great works on this subject. You can buy them at a discount through the links provided.
Whether it’s Dr. Oz or Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn instructing you, it’s very possible to learn and apply these “pain relief” principles. Your brain is like a sponge and so willing to help you out. Use it, stretch it and challenge it daily. Help your brain grow and become a better ally in your struggle with pain relief.
Have a great and wonderful week. Read a book… then practice mindfulness!
The Power of the Mind
When it comes to the power of the mind, the average person may feel more like a slave to circumstance, the whims of chance, or the sail beneath a cruel wind. And, beyond on all reason, certainly not capable of controlling personal destiny with any kind of power of the mind whatsoever.
As time goes by though, most of us find out that that is not true. History and personal growth tell us that we are in more control than first believed. How? With our power over our personal minds.
Take Fibromyalgia for example.
Do we succumb to the pain and stiffness or move about as best we can and keep on searching for answers?
Do we feel threatened and at risk because of the intense pain or do we take the point of view that the it is merely letting us know that something is wrong. Our job is to figure out the problem, fix what we can and learn to live with the lessons made clear to us along the way of the Fibromyalgia life journey.
What Are We Learning?
I invite you to search further for the answer by checking out a post I made earlier this week at Get Well Health. Take a look the ideas there. Let me know what you think. Good, bad or indifferent, illnesses like Fibromyalgia have a lot to teach us if we are willing and teachable students.
If you’ve ever been really ill with a tough chronic illness like Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, you may feel that getting healthy and on the plus side of your health may be an impossible task. Today, I’m encouraging you not to think like that. Check out the following health article and health wishes.
These particular illnesses can be darned hard to live with. You may feel miserable and, at times, despondent and in need of comfort and inspiration. If so, see my 3 Concepts Health Article , recently re-published.
Also, I have 3 health wishes that I bet you can relate to:
#1: I want to decide who I want to be and then go accomplish that goal. You and I may be sick and hurting at times, but that doesn’t have to be the sum total of who we are. We surely are more! As human beings, we’re capable of a depth and richness of life that only comes when we seek it out and are aware that it exists. So… is there more to this wish? I WISH: To make good decisions about who I am, who I want to be and what I want to accomplish.
#2: May I never ever live my life in such a frumpy and irritable way that no one wants to be around me. I strive to always be positive and happy, but of course, that’s not humanly possible and I certainly don’t achieve it. I WISH: To choose to look at life on the plus side and that includes my health.
#3: May I adopt a “healthy” attitude and live in gratitude of the life that I have. That attitude will keep me at the feet of God and there is no healthier place to be. I WISH: To live a life pleasing to Him.
I encourage you to mark this day with 3 wishes of your own. Get out a piece of paper and pen and make some notes. Choose to never ever “willingly” let Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome control you again. No matter what!
I will keep a positive attitude because it promotes my healthy mind, body and spirit!
The value of Mindfulness, as a health concept, can be seen as you become more aware of your world and are better equipped at reducing your stress level and achieving more stress relief. Mindfulness is also a very popular philosophy. It’s getting more press and I could not be more pleased. As I read an article in the Seattle Times, I am reminded just how much of our world needs great tools for stress relief to help:
1) Our military veterans returning from active duty (for stress level reduction) and
2) The group of people fighting severe chronic illnesses, such as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
As you read the article…
From the Seattle Times, please take the time to scan the blog posts here at the Health Matters Show on mindfulness.
Now I am not a Buddhist, but the practice of mindfulness seems very appropriate to me considering the world we live in. I don’t know anyone who cannot use a dose of calm and a tool for getting better stress relief.
Wikipedia describes mindfulness as “a calm awareness of one’s body functions, feelings, content of consciousness, or consciousness itself.” Of course there is much more to this concept, but just in using the words calm and awareness, I believe you can begin to understand the concepts of mindfulness and why it could be very important to your life.
In preparing and writing this post, I went back and reviewed how many times I have blogged about the topic of mindfulness. If you didn’t catch them all, I encourage you to take a quick peek to see what you might have missed. Find them by going to the “Topics Discussed” link in the middle column of the Health Matters Show blog and click on “Mindfulness.” A page will come up with all 11 times that I’ve talked about mindfulness in some form or fashion and how it can help people with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome!
So in celebration of this awareness epiphany of mine today and how important a topic mindfulness is, I have inserted this new topic into the blog and named it appropriately, Mindfulness.
I encourage you to click on the topic and read any of the posts that may help you figure out how to cope with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We need all of the helpful tools we can get!
And if you have any comments about your needs for stress relief and how to get help managing your stress level, please leave them here. I want to know what you have to say.
